
On October 14, 15 & 16, Cousin Vinny’s hosted the 1st annual Play for a Cause, Last Chance Mixed Slo-Pitch Tournament. While the purpose of the tournament was to have fun, the goal was to raise funds for local charities.
How did this tournament work? Interested teams pay their registration fee ($375), finds a charity to represent and plays for their charity over the duration of two days. Each team is guaranteed 4 games, a great meal Saturday night and a lot of fun!
Cousin Vinny’s runs multiple fundraising events through the year with the main focus going to the prevention of drinking and driving. This tournament allowed individuals to play for a charity they are passionate about.
The charities that were represented in this tournament are Action Sudbury, United Way, Heart & Stroke Foundation, Sudbury Food Bank, Whinnying in Life, Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, Childrens Miracle Network and the MCTV Children’s Telethon.
Some of the teams were lucky to be given subsidies from local business’ to help cover the cost of registration. A big thank you goes out to Hanmer Denture Clinic, Casey’s Bar and Grill and Caisse Populaire.
The top two teams in each division were given $500 to ther charity. This year, Mario Roy (representing Children's Miracle Network) won the A division and Amanda Jean (representing the Sudbury Food Bank) won the B division.
Despite the cold rainy weather the teams were out for each game, playing for the title of charity champs! The goal for next year is to attract more teams, and help ore charities!
